After all, techno is music that dreams of the future, yet it was born in Detroit—a city that experienced industrial collapse and the erasure of its own history.

Derrick May once observed that machines have neither love nor emotion, and that human beings who spend their lives working for machines risk losing their emotions as well.

It was May who infused dance music with the concept of “Hi-Tech Soul.”
